Telling Tales in Montreal

There has never been a society that did not include storytelling as an integral part of its culture. Before radio, movies, and television, it was storytelling and the singing of popular songs that filled leisure hours with tragedy and triumph, laughter and tears.

Until recently, it was widely believed that storytelling by and for adults had become a lost art. Almost miraculously, this has proven not to be the case.

In Canada, the USA, England, France, Sweden, and Australia, to mention only a few, we have seen a significant revival of storytelling in all its forms.

The Montreal Storyteller’s Guild is part of that revival. The Guild was founded 24 years ago by a group of people who had become convinced that Montrealers would enjoy hearing stories. The ensuing years have strengthened that conviction.

Since then, we have been meeting once a month from October to June (see the sidebar for the dates). In addition to our regular storytelling gatherings, the Guild has sponsored concerts and workshops. Our monthly meetings are open to all who may want to tell a story or just listen, as well as those who have not yet discovered that they are storytellers at heart.

On any given swap, one may hear folk and fairy tales, myth, legends, personal stories, and adaptations of literary stories. Each and every Friday meeting has its own character, not to mention a surprise or two.

We hope to see you soon at the various storytelling events in our fair city of Montreal!
